How To Choose The Best Directories For Your Article Writing Campaign

If you have spent any time at all researching internet marketing strategies then you know that writing articles can help position you as an expert in your field, gain valuable targeted traffic for your web site, drive leads to your products, grow your email list, and quickly multiple your site's text links.

Once you are ready to dive into article marketing -- and you have a few articles all lined up and ready to submit -- you can quickly become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of article directories available. Sure you could simply use a search engine to locate article directories but a recent search netted me 17,800,000 results. That's enough to make anyone give up before they even begin! Plus that is really not a very effective way to determine the quality of a directory and doing your own quality check can be extremely time-consuming.

Why should you care about the quality of the directory? Just think about it. On the internet you are very much judged (by search engines and visitors alike) by the company you keep. Another important reason to carefully select your article directories is that your time is finite. It is better to regularly submit to a core group of high-quality directories than to throw the same handful of articles at every directory site you can find.

Finding the best high-quality article directories that meet your specific needs and match your specific goals can greatly increase the power of your article marketing campaign. You need to become a savvy article marketer to maximize your article marketing campaign.

Great, but how do you find those high-quality directories?

When I first embarked on article marketing I went straight to people who had been article marketing for a while and asked them for their top recommendations. I posted the question in a couple forums that I regularly check. I quickly assembled a list of hundreds of sites. Now obviously this list is much more manageable than the 17+ million I got from Google but still rather large. First I culled through and found the sites that were mentioned by more than one person and that list became my starting point. I then gathered as much information as possible to determine if they were right for me. I will share my criteria and priorities but you need to work out your own.


Here are the 10 essential questions I ask when reviewing a site:

1. How old is the directory? Is it well established and ranked or is it new and growing? If not then I cross it off the list.

2. Can you easily identify who owns and/or operates the directory? Is there a way to contact that person?

3. How fast do they respond to your email contacts and/or article posts?

4. How many authors does the site have listed? A lot of authors and articles mean a well established site but there may be room on a growing site for more exposure.

5. How many articles does the site have listed? Again a big site won't get knocked off my list for this but a small site that is growing steadily might be due for a good seo bump soon.

6. Think about the categories you are likely to need and see if they exist. Is there a place to submit all your articles? If this is a niche directory it may be very narrow but then might also be to your benefit in the long run -- if at least some of your articles fit within the niche.

7. What special options does the site offer visitors and publishers? Do they provide RSS feeds, email alerts, forward to a friend function and other strategies to increase the distribution of your articles?

8. Are they responsible with the advertising clients they have on their site? ie: No popups, flashing, or offensive ads

9. Do they provide article reports to help you see which articles are getting viewed, rated, distributed or not?

10. How do the search engines view this site?

After visiting each directory and answering these questions it is easy to refine your list to a handful of top sites that you want to really concentrate your efforts upon. You can also maintain some a list of additional sites to submit to as time allows.

I also regularly re-evaluate my top article directory list. I check my backlinks and the directory stats to see how my articles are doing. Some sites move up and down my priority list (or even off the list entirely) when I investigate how they are performing for me.

Learn Why You Should Have A 3-Tiered Strategy For Article Submission

You've heard a lot about how much writing articles can do for your internet marketing strategy. You now understand how writing articles can help position you as an expert in your field, gain valuable targed traffic for your web site, and quickly multiple your site's text links.

Now you have convinced yourself to take the plunge into article marketing and you have a few articles all lined up and ready to submit -- and you are overwhelmed by the sheer volume and variety of article directories available. It is easy to simply go with the big dogs and forget the rest, but that is a big mistake. You really need to have a 3-tiered article submission strategy. Select a couple of the big dogs, but also add some medium-sized directories and some smaller, newer directories to your list for regular submission as well. The mega-directories carry a big punch in terms of link power and recognition. You can almost watch the reader numbers climb on your articles. But because they are so big they also get a large volume of submissions every day and your articles very quickly move from the top page of the directories new submissions list and even from the top page of the topic listing.

Medium-sized directories don't pack as big a punch as the mega, but their text link value is still strong and they usually have a solid reader base. They have been around long enough to build a loyal audience and clientele. However because they are not as big their submission volume is lower than the mega so your articles retain top billing longer -- and becoming a top article or top author may be an attainable goal for the part-timer.

Small and/or new directories usually don't offer nearly the level of power of their larger brethren, but a quick study will reveal whether or not the directory is regularly maintained and promoted -- and you know that will mean the link power currently exists and will grow in the near future. Also with new and small directories you can easily achieve top author status and your articles will stay at the top of the ranking longer -- they may well pass directly from "new" status to "top" status which rarely if ever happens at a mega directory.

Top 5 Tips for Successful Article Writing

You may have heard by now that writing articles and submitting them to different locations is a great way to increase the traffic to your web sites and in the end increase your income. But if the articles you write aren't getting people's attention and they are not clicking on your links in the resource box, then you need to do something about it!
Here are the top 5 tips that will help you write the most successful articles.


  1. The most important thing you need to do when writing articles is to capture your reader's attention. How else are they going to read to the bottom of your article to click on your link? How can you get people's attention? It has been proven that people related better to stories or people they know. Adding a quote from a well known person near the beginning of your article to make people associate your knowledge with the well known person's knowledge. Or alternatively you could retell a story that you once heard, it can be something that happened to you or a fable that you can make connections to your topic with.
  2. Of course what is a great article without a catchy title?! The reason I still put that you need an article that will capture and keep people's attention is that this will decide how many people enjoy your article. You want to keep a high level of quality for all your articles, since that will bring in the most people to visit your web sites. But of course you will need a title to get people to take a look at your article. You will want to come up with a title that describes what your article topic is, but with something of a mystery to get people to click. People respond well to lists and "top 10's" but they also like questions or implications of success.
  3.  Pick a very hot topic. If you're writing about nursing or babies, try to write an article about the latest fad in diapers or something that is related to the current world. Write articles that are seasonal or festive. Webmasters and ezine owners are always looking for an article that relates well to the current time of the year. When it's Christmas time, relate your topic to Christmas and do the same for other holidays and seasons. If you're not sure what else you could use, read the news, some weblogs or talk to your friends to find out the most current events.
  4. Check your grammar and spelling. This might seem obvious, but articles that have bad grammar or spelling are not going to help you much. Submit Articles Here There and Everywhere - Boom! Top Of The Search Engines

While it is true that submitting articles can create massive amounts of traffic to your site there are a few key things to be considered. Unless of course your a lone ranger marketing in a niche without any competition, if so, this article is not for you. Simply a few backlinks with choice keywords aimed at your niche without any competitors pages and your flying high on page one of the top 3 search engines. Actually, now that I think about it while proofing this article - if that is you, please contact me as I'd like to know which niche your in. (:--)

Well that's a nice thought for a perfect world where everyone get's their own niche and every page of your site fills the first 3 pages of a Google search, but for the rest of us in larger markets the competition can be very fierce.
I'm not sure about you but I think many people blindly submit articles to article directories and ezine publishers without consideration for the keywords their targeting using their anchor text in their resource box or throughout the article. Most of us by now know that backlinks built up to our sites, steadily and progressively over time will cause us to rise, rise, rise in the serp's (search engine results pages).

There are SEO forums filled to overflowing on proper choice of keywords. I've not spent much time studying all the latest tips and tricks but while learning online marketing over this past year I've certainly picked up alot of knowledge of what works and what doesn't on the net.

Okay, enough of an intro - if your targeting a large market like say - "internet marketing" for example - just know that according to Google your up against 278 million pages that are also targeting this keyword. While a quick search in Overtures database reveals over 302 thousand searches in January of 2006 alone - this may be a market to be in some would quickly assume - well, maybe if your willing to wait a long time or have a 100,000 dollars in your bank account to captivate nearly every form of online promotion along with an expensive article submission service.

Of course with a little keyword research you could weed out about 98% of that competition. Let's dive right in and see what's possible.

I'm going to use my favorite keyword research tool, which I'm very enthusiastic about btw, email me if you need the best free one available, I'm going to look and see if I can find an easier keyword even in this large market. Hold tight, I'll be right back.


Okay, I'm back, why not target your articles and sites around the keyword of "idea making money" , it's regularily searched, over 8,000 times in January of 2006 but only has 9540 competing pages. In fact, I'm quite impressed by this keyword and I just might target it myself unless you beat me too it. Anyway, by targeting your articles, web pages and backlink anchor text keywords to this lesser competitive term you'll drastically shorten the time it takes to get to page 1 of the top 3 engines. Although the payout in the end won't be as large due to less traffic you will be handsomely rewarded if you do this 10 or 15 times over on different keywords, to do this just add more pages to your site - you'll need lot's anyway! By using keywords that have a realistic page 1-3 serp reach, you could see page one within only days or weeks rather than months or years. I also have a really impressive and fast site builder too if your in need. Again, email me if interested so I don't have to advertise an affiliate program in this article, which is another no no I hear. (:--)

In closing, some other quick tips not to forget - use your keyword once in the title of your article if it sounds realistic and not stupid! My suggested keyword above will need some creativity to flow well in sentences. Add your keyword a couple times throughout a 5-700 word article and once in your resource box should easily be enough. Just don't over do it and since the engines are more and more shooting for quality non-duplicated content your going to have to be submitting articles that are in english for long term reliability (:--).

Also, regarding the web page your targeting, use your keyword(s) once in the page title, once in your page headers, in at least one of the alt tags of your pictures and around 0.5 - 2 % of your pages total words. I've found this makes a difference when the spiders come crawling your pages.
